What is Gaspé 2009?
In 2009, Gaspé will celebrate 475 years of existence. Much has changed and evolved since Jacques Cartier first stepped onto the continent 475 years ago, but we are still a French-speaking nation, proud of our roots and our history. The Gaspé 2009 festivities commemorate this history, this past rich in memories, battles, uprisings and evolution. And this is why the corporation was established, the goal being to celebrate the 475th anniversary of Jacques Cartier's arrival on Gaspesian soil. The committee organising these festivities endeavours to make Gaspé 2009 a grass-roots celebration, an opportunity for everyone, regardless of origin, to salute our history and take pride in our heritage and culture.
Where does our funding come from?
The committee is currently completing the final arrangements for funding from the provincial and federal
governments. Gaspé 2009 has already received a positive response from Québec, which has granted a sum of $1.5 million. We have applied to the federal government for another $1.5 million in funding but are still awaiting confirmation. In addition to these grants, we receive funding from various ministries and departments, private partners and the Ville de Gaspé.
What activities are planned?
Throughout 2009, cultural and entertaining activities will be organised for young and old. The committee is finalising arrangements for the last activities and has invited the public and organisations to participate as fully as possible in preparing these festivities by proposing projects that will all be assessed so we can include as many as possible in the Gaspé 2009 celebration program. People are central to the festivities so it's normal that they should play a role in helping to organise them, the goal being to truly reflect who Gaspesians are today.
When does the celebration begin?
The festivities will kick off on the bridge in downtown Gaspé on New Year's Eve 2008. A magnificent fireworks display will light up the sky and Gaspé Bay, signalling the beginning of a year-long round of festivities.
